Two students from Cape Coral among Valdosta State University summer 2021 graduates
Valdosta State University has announced the members of its graduating class of summer 2021. Among the graduates was Halle Friedel of Cape Coral, who earned an associate of arts degree, and Reshad Washington of Cape Coral, who earned a bachelor of business administration in marketing degree
More than 550 students completed their degree requirements during Summer Semester 2021.

Cape’s Ring among most academically accomplished class in University of Iowa history
IOWA CITY, Iowa — This fall’s incoming undergraduate class at the University of Iowa — a group that includes Amber Ring of Cape Coral — has yet again topped previous records in achievement with a higher average high school grade-point average (GPA), at 3.81, than any previous class. The average high school GPA for the classes of 2024 and 2023 were 3.78 and 3.76, respectively.
Ring is majoring in nursing interest in Iowa’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The Class of 2025 is composed of 4,521 students, up slightly from last year. This year, 21,608 undergraduates are enrolled at the University of Iowa, which is located in Iowa City.

School District of Lee County to host Social Lee informational event
The School District of Lee County is hosting Social Lee: Careers & Conversations, an informational event that will provide insight on teaching positions within the District, on Thursday, Sept. 30, in Fort Myers.
Ideal for prospective career-changers and working professionals, attendees will have the opportunity to meet District representatives, learn about the variety of career paths available and walk through the process of becoming certified to teach in Florida. Select candidates may also be offered an interview for potential employment.
Florida is one of 48 states that offer alternative routes to becoming a certified teacher. Individuals who already earned a bachelor's degree in any field can become eligible for Florida teacher certification by passing a subject area exam in their area of expertise, completing additional coursework or enrolling in a teacher preparation program.
With a growing enrollment of more than 95,000 students and 120 schools, the District is looking to connect talented, high-energy educators with instructional vacancies for the upcoming school year. Positions are available across the District with a focus on high-demand positions like English, elementary education, science, math and special education, as well as for non-instructional positions including bus drivers and bilingual paraprofessionals.

Adult Learners' Resource Fair set for this Saturday at FSW
Florida SouthWestern State College will hold an Adult Learners' Resource Fair Saturday, Sept. 18, 12:30-2:30 p.m., in Building J, at the FSW Lee Campus, 8099 College Parkway, Fort Myers. Current and potential adult learners and their families are invited to attend.
Adult learners, or nontraditional students, are students who are over the age of 22 when beginning college but can also include students who are married, students supporting dependents, veterans, financially-independent students, and students who work full-time. More than 25 percent of FSW's student population are adult learners.
During the fair, current and potential FSW adult learners will have a chance to visit with various departments, including financial aid, tutoring, online learning, and the library. In addition, potential adult learners will be able to attend sessions on navigating college admissions, how to pay for college, and balancing the various responsibilities they face. Potential adult learners will also receive a promo code to apply for free.
Activities, games on the lawn, popcorn, and snow cones will be available for attendees and their families. Free tickets to the FSW women's volleyball game beginning at 2 p.m. that afternoon will also be available to the attendees and their families.

FGCU Foundation Board announces new officers and directors
The Florida Gulf Coast University Foundation Inc. has approved its slate of officers, elected four new board members and re-elected another four members for a second term.
Foundation board officers for fiscal year 2021-2022 are Chair Chuck Ketteman, Vice Chair Mayela Rosales, Treasurer Doug VanOort and Secretary Geurt Peet.
Newly elected board members are:
• Brett Diamond is a native of Naples and serves as the chief innovation officer of DeAngelis Diamond.
• Claudine Leger-Wetzel is vice president of sales and marketing for Stock Development and owner of LVJ Marketing, a full-service marketing consulting firm based in Naples.
• Gail Markham is the founding partner of the accounting firm Markham Norton Mosteller Wright and Company PA.
• Michael Wynn, a 2005 graduate of FGCU with an MBA, is CEO of Sunshine Ace Hardware
Board members serving a second four-year term are:
• Dr. Larry Antonucci, is the president/CEO of Lee Health.
• Harry Casimir graduated from FGCU in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in computer information systems and earned his MBA with a concentration in project management from Norwich University in Vermont. He is the chief technology officer of ATILUS, a digital agency he co-founded while attending FGCU.
n Mary Beth Geier serves as the Florida region coordinator and senior program officer for the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation and works out of the Naples office.
n Michael Hartley is the CEO of Standard Bent Glass in Butler, Pennsylvania, as well as several other companies he has purchased and/or founded located in Western Pennsylvania.

FSW receives $20,550 grant from the Truist Foundation
Florida SouthWestern State College has received a $20,550 grant from the Truist Foundation. The grant will be used to expand and purchase new equipment for FSW's associate in science degree in digital art and multimedia production program.
There is a growing need, both in the Southwest Florida region and nationally, for digital content creators as more and more businesses look for employees with digital and multimedia skills. Currently, six Florida state and community colleges offer similar programs.
