Bishop Verot High School announces National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist
Bishop Verot Catholic High School has announced this year's Semifinalist in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. Sophia Miller, daughter of Daniel and Larissa Miller of Cape Coral, is one of only 16,000 students nationwide to be recognized among the 1.5 million juniors who entered the competition by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Being named Semifinalist puts Miller in a group representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. These academically talented students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million to be offered next spring, after fulfilling several requirements to advance to Finalist standing.

Busey Wealth Management title sponsor for Mina Edison Society's Focus on Excellence Event
Busey Wealth Management has been announced as title sponsor for the Florida SouthWestern State College Foundation's Mina Edison Society's Focus on Excellence Scholarship and Award Luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at The Forest Country Club in Fort Myers.
The Mina Edison Society provides scholarships for academic excellence at FSW. Since its creation in 2007, the Mina Edison Society has awarded scholarships to 65 students.
FSW President Dr. Jeffery S. Allbritten will give the keynote address "FSW: Shaping Our Region." Luminary Award recipient Kathy Galloway and current FSW scholarship students will also be recognized. NBC2's Kellie Burns will serve as the master of ceremonies.

Madeline Wilk joins Earn to Learn FL as Near Peer Coach Program Coordinator
Earn to Learn Florida (ETLF), a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to empower income-challenged students to complete college, announced that Madeline Wilk has been named Near Peer Coach program coordinator.
"Near Peer Success coaches support students as they transition from high school to a postsecondary education institution," said Brenda Tate, CEO of Earn to Learn FL. "Members focus on advising students, especially those from low-income backgrounds, through the complex steps toward college enrollment, including the admission and financial aid processes."
"Madeline has a strong background of empowering young people to reach their full potential," said Tate. "She leads our Near Peer program by finding, recruiting, training, and providing support for our peers and students."
AmeriCorps funds the Near Peer program in partnership with Volunteer Florida. The program targets economically disadvantaged students in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Sarasota, Lee, and Collier Counties, with plans to expand to other counties. Each Near Peer Coach receives a stipend of $9,900, plus a $3,000 scholarship for their continued education upon completion of 12 months of service. This year 72 Near Peer coaches will be deployed by ETLF.
"The Near Peer program helps students pursue their dream of completing a postsecondary education with little or no debt," said Wilk. "Not only do the students benefit, but the peers find themselves growing as they share what they have learned through their own experiences. It's rewarding to see the impact on both the students and the peers."
Wilk's experience includes working as club manager for the Boys &Girls Clubs of Chicago and as a Girls in the Game program specialist. This organization helps girls discover their strengths and lead with confidence through active sports, health, and leadership programs. She earned her Bachelor of Science from Ball State University in Indiana in Kinesiology and Exercise Science.
Earn to Learn FL empowers low-to-moderate income students in Florida to earn college degrees and professional certifications with little or no debt through matched savings, personalized financial capability training, and success coaching. Bishop Verot High School announces Nationally Commended Students
Four seniors from Bishop Verot Catholic High School have received national recognition for academic success.
Michael Armiras, Arielle Dicang, Anna Latell, and Grace Marie Smith have been named Commended Students in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation which conducts the program, was presented to this scholastically talented student.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2022 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2022 competition by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Barton graduates from Ohio University
Elizabeth Barton from Sanibel, graduated with a Master of Science in Nursing (Family Nurse Practitioner) from the College of Health Sciences and Professions at Ohio University during the Summer 2021 semester.
More than 1,900 students graduated with bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degrees from Ohio University for summer semester 2021.
The graduates represented many areas of the United States and an abundance of countries, including: Bangladesh, China, Germany, Ghana, India, Netherlands and Nigeria, among others.
