Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter has accepted a challenge from the mayor of the Town of Fort Myers Beach to collect the most cards for veterans this Christmas season.
Gunter shared the challenge Wednesday during the Cape Coral City Council workshop.
"The mayor of the Town of Fort Myers Beach has challenged all the mayors throughout Lee County to see who can gather the most cards," he said.
Gunter said he has reached out to Publix to see if they would want to participate, as they are a great location to buy cards, and possibly collect cards for pickup once a week.
"I am trying to work through that now. I would like to get 10,000 (cards) here in the city of Cape Coral and send them to veterans oversees to wish them a Merry Christmas," Gunter said.
Councilmember Rachel Kaduk said they should reach out to the superintendent of Oasis Charter Schools, and Lee County School District Board Member Sam Fisher to gain participation from Cape Coral schools.
