To the editor:
This opinion column was in many papers across the county last week and it is so revealing I thought a letter to point out the hypocrisy was in order.
New York Times opinion writer David Brooks wrote a column last weekend, "What I love When I Love America."
It states that Americans are not as proud of their country as they once were. He states that Republicans are prouder of America than Democrats -- 92% of Republicans and 36% of Democrats. Republican's pride is unconditional and Democrats more conditional. The Democrats pride has dropped a great deal during the two Trump eras. Most Democrats no longer have an American dream.
He stated that he loves America for its raw energy, the force that produces crassness, materialism and from time-to-time immaturity. He calls Abraham Lincoln's era one of aspirations and Trump's a gaudy display, even cites Elon Musk as occasional recklessness.
He says that America's greatness is intertwined with embarrassing materialism. He cites Gov. Gavin Newsom for political lunacy because he is behaving more like Trump since he too, is rich. He cites the dark days for America in the 1970's ending in Carter having been revived with the optimism, patriotism and hope of Reagan.
I don't know that I have ever read a more hypocritical column.
David Brooks has beat up on Trump and promoted Democratic Party ideals in every column he writes. Yet America's optimism and patriotism diminish during Democratic administrations. I cite LBJ, Carter, Obama and Biden administrations as having very big American problems both foreign and domestic. That is when earnings were the worst, prices inflated the most and ideology was promoted more than freedom and opportunity.
America was built on personal responsibility. The early Americans did not live on welfare and Obamacare. They did not have free lunches for half of American. Yet, David Brooks pushes these same free lunches and denounces Trump who led and leads America into a growing prosperous country which is very difficult after the Democrats have been pushing it into a socialistic country leading to high cost of government and low productivity.
Nothing has been more visible than the Democrat's attempts to make this country socialistic and nothing is more expensive and less productive.
Elon Musk, who he criticizes is the best example of the opportunity in America. He started from scratch and now is the wealthiest person in America due to his genius at creating and managing.
Brooks cites Newsom as being like Trump when Newsom is the most socialistic governor in America and has made an expensive debt laden state excelling in homeless and migrant criminals from which people are moving out a failing state in every way. The closest equal is Gov. Walz.
I read David Brooks column and just looked with my mouth wide open at what he wrote. Has he not thought before he spoke?
