In March, the Cape Coral City Council rejected a proposal to construct 800 condominiums and a hotel on the wetlands at Redfish Point, south of Rotary Park in Southwest Cape Coral. The area is now designated for natural resource preservation and is important in safeguarding the homes in the area from storm surge and flooding.
Also, one of the other problems is all of the building of homes and apartments are causing a water shortage in Cape Coral and Lee County, the water table or aquifer is well below normal level and the infrastructure cannot handle new building.
The developers have since requested a reassessment of Redfish Point's protected status, which is currently under review.
This decision is critical, as the wetlands play a vital role in shielding local homes from storm surges and flooding. Developing this area would not only necessitate significant infrastructure investment at taxpayers' expense but also jeopardize one of the last remaining natural barriers that protect residents.
It is essential for the mayor, and the council listen the voices of the Cape Coral citizens and stop acting like the agents to the real estate developers and investors.
Preserving Redfish Point is crucial for the community's safety and environmental integrity, and it is important that development in this sensitive area does not go forward.
