To the editor:
The county and city of Fort Myers need to unilaterally start the process of returning the statue of Robert E. Lee somewhere in their jurisdictions. Why was his statue taken down?
Robert E. Lee was a great man of faith, from Virginia, graduated second in his class at West Point in 1829, eventually becoming the superintendent of West Point in 1855. When Virginia voted to secede from the union, Lee was opposed to the idea of succession. Being the man of honor that he was, he chose with honor to serve the south, after very careful consideration, only to the great disappointment of the North.
Where is his statue and why is it not visible to the people of Lee County?
