Cape Coral City Council approved an upgraded license plate reader technology for the Cape Coral Police Department Wednesday.
Resolution 156-26 received unanimous approval with a software company, as the sole provider for the Cape Coral Police Department's body-worn program, software and related equipment, and related license for $1,155,070.38 for 10 years.
Councilmember Rachel Kaduk, pulled the item for discussion to confirm the department were not installing additional Flock cameras, which Chief Anthony Sizemore confirmed.
"The one thing people need to understand --- Flock is a manufacture," Councilmember Laurie Lehmann said.
The city has used various manufacturers since 2006.
"The upgrade on the license plate readers is not causing any kind of surveillance issues - it takes pictures of the back of the car and license plate at a specific moment," Lehmann said. "That license plate reader also in the long run is actually helping us and the city to find lost people, kids that are kidnapped and all kinds of horror stories. "It's not a bad thing; it's a good thing."
