Veterans Day quilt ceremony held

On Veterans Day, the Cape Coral Quilters Guild held its annual ceremony presenting handmade military honor quilts to six local veterans at Cape Alliance Church on Skyline Boulevard in Cape Coral.
Each of these recipients shared interesting and moving stories of their service days. Retired Air Force 1st Lt. Evelyn Marchant holds the honor from the early 1970s of being the first female ROTC student at the University of Michigan. Retired Navy CT 14 Roy Kennedy and Marine Corps Sgt. David Thompson continue in training more than 25 service and guide dogs through "Dogs Inc." organization, to donate to military veterans and disabled citizens.
An organization since 1994, Cape Quilters Guild members have made and donated 8,000 hand-crafted quilts to local hospices, fire and police departments and additional organizations for distribution. Members also make and donate various hand quilted items to additional area organizations, including Christmas stockings sent to deployed military soldiers.
The guild also holds annual quilt shows, open to the public, at the Cape Coral Public Library, including demonstrations of quilting techniques. The guild currently has more than 100 members volunteering their time and talents for these efforts. More information on CCQG can be found online at capecoralquiltguild.com.
