Evacuations ordered, officials urge: ‘Do not wait’

Lee County Public Safety Director Ben Abes announced Monday afternoon that the county is ordering a mandatory evacuation for zones A and B by Tuesday evening. Zones A and B include the county’s barrier islands of Fort Myers Beach, Matlacha, Pine Island and Sanibel. The zones also include portions of Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, San Carlos Park and North Fort Myers. The city of Sanibel has ordered a mandatory evacuation in advance of Hurricane Milton, which has strengthened into a Category 5 storm. A category 5 hurricane which entails winds of 157 mph or higher. At 9:45 a.m. today, Oct. 7, city officials held a news conference to provide storm information and updates. Mandatory evacuation order issued for Sanibel

Sanibel is now under an evacuation order. Sanibel Mayor Richard Johnson, with the support of City Council, has issued a proclamation ordering the evacuation of Sanibel by Tuesday at 10 p.m. Sanibel residents and business owners are urged to prepare for impacts from this storm and evacuate the island as soon as possible. Lee Health hospitals remain open

Lee Health has been preparing for the risks related to Hurricane Milton as it approaches the state of Florida. Lee Health has provided the following updates: • Lee Health hospitals remain open. • Most Lee Health outpatient facilities are closed Tuesday through Thursday, except for the Complex Care Centers that will be open until Tuesday at 5 p.m. Call Centers will also be open to take calls on Tuesday. • The Young Driver program on October 8 was rescheduled to Tuesday October 15 at AAA 2516 Colonial Blvd Fort Myers from 5pm to 7pm.
