City looks to sell properties it deems ‘surplus’

Cape Coral City Council agreed to look into selling properties it deems surplus Wednesday.
Mayor John Gunter said he brought the proposal forward to look outside the box for revenue sources for the city.
"The city manager is looking for a consensus to move this forward. He will go back and confirm that these properties are going to be surplus. He will have to bring those back to us in a voting meeting," Gunter said, adding that he was looking for a "consensus to move forward with the initiative knowing it will have to come back to us with specificity."
Councilmember Joe Kilraine said it was a great recommendation.
"All of these parcels we are not getting ad valorem taxes on," Gunter said. "If they are on the tax roll and given a yearly income because of ad valorum taxes. To move all these surplus properties forward, we can benefit on both sides."
According to agenda documents, the value of the properties ranged from an estimated market value of $10,000 to $750,000.
