The expansion of Cape Coral Parkway to six lanes will be among the discussion items at Wednesday’s Cape Coral City Council workshop.
The lane configuration, signal retiming and parking space study came about due to significant traffic congestion during travel peak hours at the Cape Coral Bridge.
The city’s Public Works Department was assigned the task of increasing the roadway capacity of the main thoroughfare from the Cape into Fort Myers as well as Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel. As proposed, the plan calls for repurposing the parking/turn-lanes to through lanes and retiming traffic lights.
This project would also align Cape Coral Parkway with the future Cape Coral Bridge six-lane expansion.
Challenges include addressing traffic congestion, signal timing issues, parking concerns, travel lane obstructions and lane merge, according to city documents.
The first task is striping and re-laning, which would expand the parkway from four to six lanes between Coronado Parkway and Del Prado Boulevard.
The second task - signal retiming along Cape Coral Parkway, as well as two signals on Del Prado Boulevard to further optimize traffic flow.
The third task would be the parking replacement study, as the transition to six lanes requires the replacement of 56 parking spaces along the parkway.
The final task is the assessment of travel lane obstructions, which will help determine if modifications or removals are necessary.
Council is expected to consider a contract on Oct. 30, followed by a purchase order on Nov. 20. The city's Public Works department has engaged with CALITRAN Engineering Group, Inc. to complete the engineering design of the project.
Construction is anticipated to begin Aug. 30, 2025, and completed in Nov. 15, 2025.
The workshop is set for Wednesday, Oct. 23, beginning at 9 a.m. in City Council chambers, 1015 Cultural Park Blvd. The meeting is open to the public.
