Voting for the Cape Coral Breeze Athlete of the Month for September is now open.
We had countless top performances from student-athletes in our coverage area to start the new year and now it's up our readers to decide who will earn top honors for the month.
Nominees for September include:
• Justin Lewis, Mariner Tritons, senior: The stand-out senior broke a school record dating back to 1989 when he threw for five touchdowns in a 46-7 win over Bonita Springs. Lewis, who went 10-of-14 for 166 yards, also returned a punt 62 yards for a score.
• Skye Persechino, Oasis Sharks, freshman: The freshman broke a school record at the Pirate Invitational in Port Charlotte. Persechino set a new mark to beat for the Sharks and finished first in the pool, swimming a 56.55 in the girls 100-meter freestyle, a record since 2010.
• Andre Devine, North Fort Myers Red Knights, senior: The playmaking running back turned in a big performance in a tough defeat against Lemon Bay. Costa carried 18 times for 121 yards and three touchdowns, and is now averaging more than 150 all-purpose yards-per-game this year.
• Melissa Blaine, Cape Coral Seahawks, senior: The senior standout came home with two first-place finishes at the Tarpon Invitational, where the Seahawks were victorious. Blaine placed first in the 200-meter IM and the 500-meter freestyle, and was also part of a second-place 200-meter freestyle relay team.
• Katarina Hagler, Oasis, senior: The senior bowler had a solid week of competition for the Sharks, bowling a 243 with 10 strikes and 1 spare vs. East Lee and rolling a 267 with 9 strikes and 2 spares vs. Gate-way.
• Noah Tolbert, Mariner Tritons, senior: The senior quarterback accounted for five total touchdowns in Mariner’s 46-6 win over Ida Baker. Tolbert threw for 91 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 97 yards and three scores.
• Ivan Harvin, Cape Coral Seahawks, junior: The junior quarterback helped the Seahawks pull out a come-from-behind victory over Gateway, throwing two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. His second touchdown pass of the game came with just 1:14 left to play, propelling Cape to a 14-9 win and 2-0 start.
• Kelvin Jimenez, Mariner Tritons, senior: The two-way threat reeled in four passes for 82 yards and two touchdowns, while leading the Tritons in tackles (9) in a 49-0 win in the home-opener versus DeSoto County. The win moves Mariner to 2-0 on the year.
• Carter Smith, Bishop Verot Vikings, junior: One of the top quarterbacks in the region showed why he's a special player during Bishop Verot's Week 1 win versus Port Charlotte. Smith showed off his prowess through the air and with his legs, going 15-of-22 for 336 yards and five passing touchdowns, while rushing for 84 yards. He posted a 150.6 quarterback rating for the game.
• Parker Smith, Oasis Sharks, junior: The junior quarterback helped lead the Sharks to an opening-week win over Gateway Charter, going 7-of-9 through the air for 170 yards and four touchdown passes.
