North falls in state softball semifinals, 5-4

Semifinals

Winter Springs 5, North Fort Myers 4: The Bears scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to end the Red Knights’ state title hopes. Mia Lane cracked a three-run homer for the Red Knights (20-8) and Abigail Hynes had a solo home run and a double, scoring twice. Second-seeded Winter Springs will face top seed Niceville for the Class 5A championship on Saturday.

SPRING FOOTBALL

Island Coast 20, North Port 9: Christian Henderson scored two Island Coast touchdowns, a 75-yard run and a 46-yard catch from Terrance Taylor. Alijah Touchstone ran in a Gators score from 4 yards away.  The Island Coast defense had four takeaways, including one by Henderson. It was the end of the first spring training for new coach Steve O’Neal.

Mariner 14, Braden River 14: Down 14-0 at the half, the Tritons rallied to pull out a tie. The Tritons opened the second half with an 85-yard drive capped by Owen O'Leary hitting Jamarion Corbett for a 15-yard touchdown. Late in the fourth quarter, Steven Carter caught a 20-yard scoring pass from O’Leary.

Ida Baker 44, Canterbury 15: Nikolas Korf scored three touchdowns on the ground, while new quarterback Aiden Thurber connected on TD passes to Roderick Thompkins and Caelum Cragin as the Bulldogs rolled past the Cougars. Logan Castellon also ran for a touchdown, and new kicker Diego Nunes added a field goal for new coach Cullen O’Brien’s team.
