Nguyen completes PA studies at New York Institute of Technology
At its annual white coat ceremony on May 19, New York Institute of Technology’s Physician Assistant Studies program celebrated graduating members of the Class of 2021, including Nguyen Nguyen of Cape Coral.
White coat ceremonies are a rite of passage celebrating the completion of students’ training as they graduate and pursue careers as PAs. In marking the transition into professional life, the event centers around the symbolic awarding of a new long white coat, which replaces the short student white coat worn daily to class and clerkships.
PAs are healthcare professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider.
New York Institute of Technology offers 90 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs in more than 50 fields of study. University of Alabama's Graber on SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll
A total of 66 University of Alabama student-athletes earned a place on the Southeastern Conference Winter Academic Honor Roll, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey announced recently, including Lexi Graber of Cape Coral, a gymnast majoring in public relations.
All 12 members of the 2021 SEC Champion gymnastics team eligible by class (student-athletes must be a sophomore or better to earn the accolade) made the list, led by NCAA Champions Luisa Blanco and Graber.
To earn a place on the honor roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.0 or better grade point average for either the preceding academic year or their career and be a sophomore or better in academic standing. The winter list honors those student-athletes that participate in men’s and women’s basketball, gymnastics and men’s and women’s swimming and diving as well as equestrian and rifle.

Sinclair named to Troy University Chancellor’s List
Sarah Sinclair of Matlacha Isles has been named to the Chancellor’s List at Troy University for the spring semester/Term 4 of the 2020/21 academic year.
The Chancellor’s List honors full-time undergraduate students who are registered for at least 12 semester hours and who earn a grade point average of 4.0.
Troy University is a public, historic, international university with 22,500 students and 154,000 alumni. Troy offers a number academic programs with flexible in-class and online class offerings. Students on the Troy, Ala., campus enjoy a traditional college experience, while adult students are the centers of attention at campuses in Dothan, Montgomery and Phenix City, Ala., as well as at locations around the world and online.

Students named to Wisconsin-Stout Dean’s List for spring 2021
The following students from the area have been named to the University of Wisconsin-Stout Dean’s List for the spring 2021 semester:
n Dan Marshall, a senior from Cape Coral, BS Mechanical Engineering, BS applied science
The award is presented to students who have a grade point average of 3.5 or above.
UW-Stout, Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University, has 47 undergraduate majors and 24 graduate programs, including one doctoral degree. UW-Stout, established in 1891, prides itself on the success of its students in the workplace, with an employment rate above 97% for recent graduates.
The university was awarded the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2001.
Enrollment was 7,970 in the fall.
Hodges University Commencement to celebrate classes of 2020 and 2021
The rite of passage for university students is graduation. Hodges University is preparing to celebrate the accomplishments of the Classes of 2020 and 2021 during commencement scheduled for 4 p.m., Sunday, June 20, at Hertz Arena. The ceremony will also be streamed live on the university's website.
"Last year, COVID-19 caused us to cancel commencement, so this year, we will be celebrating the Classes of both 2020 and 2021," said Dr. John Meyer, president of Hodges University. "We'll be taking all the necessary precautions so that our graduates can walk across the stage and be recognized for their hard work and dedication."

Johnson honored with endowment fund at WGCU
With the retirement of Rick Johnson, general manager, WGCU has announced the establishment of the Rick Johnson Endowment for Innovation and Education at WGCU Public Media. Johnson's career in broadcast media spanned 52 years, 12 of them at the helm of WGCU.
The Rick Johnson Endowment Fund will pay tribute to Johnson's professionalism, his passion for leading-edge technology, his collegiality and his commitment to the people who have helped public media to flourish in Southwest Florida. Proceeds from the endowment will support new technology training at WGCU, professional development and educational opportunities for WGCU staff to support continuous improvement, innovation, and efficiency.

Florida Gulf Coast University adds to communication team
Pamela McCabe, a newspaper journalist in Southwest Florida since 2007, is now Florida Gulf Coast University's coordinator, university communication and media relations. In her new role, McCabe will serve as the liaison between the media and the office of the president. Absorbing some of the duties previously handled by Susan Evans, McCabe will work with reporters and provide official university responses to campus topics that are highly visible or sensitive in nature. In the event of an emergency or crisis, she will also coordinate communications on behalf of the Office of the President and the university.
McCabe works in tandem with Kyle McCurry and Annie Hubbell of University Marketing & Communications, who are primarily responsible for promoting university news and features and coordinating faculty expert requests.

Nelsen joins marketing team at Hodges University
Hodges University has announced that Joe Nelsen has joined the staff as the senior social media and marketing content creator. In this position, he is responsible for all the University's social media, its four electronic newsletters, and Talon magazine.
A native of New York, Nelsen is a recent graduate of the University of Tampa with a bachelor's degree in communications. Prior to graduating, he gained experience in the planning and execution of social media strategies for national corporations. He also has experience in blog, website, and copywriting.

DeFilippi awarded degree from University of Alabama
Jodi DeFilippi of Cape Coral has received a bachelor of science in commerce and business administration degree from The University of Alabama. UA awarded some 5,860 degrees during its spring commencement ceremonies April 30-May 2.
