Mendes recipient of the 2021 Florida Supervisors of Elections Scholarship
Lee County Supervisor of Elections Tommy Doyle announce that Nina Mendes of Florida Gulf Coast University is a recipient of the "Dorothy Walker Ruggles Scholarship" awarded by the Florida Supervisors of Elections Scholarship Foundation on Wednesday, June 16, at the 2021 Annual FSE Summer Conference
Each year, the FSE awards $1,200 scholarships to three or more deserving Florida undergraduate students. A student must be enrolled or accepted as a full-time student in a senior college or university in Florida, and must be a political science, public administration, business administration, journalism or mass media communications major.
Mendes, a journalism major, was the sole applicant from Lee County and received the highest score from the Scholarship Committee for her academic achievements and civic engagement.
Mendes works in the Communications Department at Valerie's House, a Southwest Florida-based nonprofit dedicated to helping children grieve the loss of a parent or sibling. Her current role involves interviewing and writing articles about the families the organization supports. She plans to continue working with Valerie's House after graduating next spring.
The FSE Scholarship honors three former Supervisors of Elections: Escambia County’s Joe Oldmixon, Highland County’s Jimmy Whitehouse and Pinellas County’s Dorothy Walker Ruggles. All of Florida's 67 counties may participate. Each County Supervisor reviews applications received and selects one finalist to send to the FSE Scholarship Committee.
Mahan named to Dean’s List, receives diploma at Norwich University
Jonathan Wayne Mahan of Cape Coral received a bachelor of arts in history from Norwich University at the May 1 commencement ceremony in a hybrid of virtual streamed and in-person events held campus-wide in accordance with Vermont pandemic guidelines and with the Norwich community’s health and safety as the highest priority.
The Class of 2021 includes approximately 447 students from 32 undergraduate programs and one master’s program: 437 bachelor’s degrees and 10 Masters of Architecture as well as 18 International students from 10 countries on five continents. There were four separate commencement ceremonies, two each running simultaneously in Shapiro Fieldhouse and Kreitzberg Arena.
Mahan was also named to the Dean’s List at Norwich University for the Spring 2021 semester.
Full-time undergraduate students, who earned a semester grade point average of at least 3.40 and had no failures in the previous Fall or Spring semester are awarded Dean’s List honors. These students cannot have any pending Incomplete (I) grades. Dean’s List honors are noted on the official transcript each term earned.

Masks now optional at FSW
Florida SouthWestern State College students will have the option of not wearing masks when they return to campus to begin courses in FSW’s Summer Mini-B term as of Wednesday, June 23.
In light of the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations for fully-vaccinated people, the wearing of face coverings and social distancing will be optional at all FSW campuses and locations.
FSW values personal safety and personal choice and encourages those who prefer to continue to wear face coverings to do so.

School District earns Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting
The School District of Lee County has been awarded the Government Finance Officers Association Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its Comprehensive Financial Audit Report for the year ending June 30, 2020. The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.
After the close of each fiscal year, state law requires that all local governments publish a complete set of financial statements presented in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles in the United States of America and audited by the Florida Auditor General, or a firm of licensed certified public accountants. The Florida Auditor General conducted the audit for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2020
