Vazquez receives white coat during ceremonies at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine
SCRANTON, Pa. — Frank Vazquez of Cape Coral was among the 115 new medical students who received their white coat and took an oath during ceremonies held by Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine on Aug. 7.
The Class of 2025’s 115 future doctors participated in a ceremony, held in virtually every other medical school in the nation, designed to welcome new medical students into the profession. Students recited an oath acknowledging their responsibilities as future physicians and their obligations to future patients. Then they were cloaked with the white coat — the mantle of the medical profession.
Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (Geisinger Commonwealth) is a member of the Geisinger family. Geisinger Commonwealth offers a community-based model of medical education with campuses in Danville, Doylestown, Scranton, Sayre and Wilkes-Barre. Fundamentals of Dental Assisting program starts in October at Hodges
Classes start in October for a six-week Foundations of Dental Assisting program with Hodges Connect, the workforce initiative of the Hodges University's Professional Education and Training department.
Those interested in a career in the dental field can get their start with the Foundations of Dental Assisting program at Hodges University. The demand for dental assistants is expected to grow 23% by 2026 in Florida.
Students will learn dental terminology, anatomy, instrument sterilization, communication and patient privacy, appointment scheduling, financial arrangements and inventory maintenance. Students will also learn how to properly mix and prepare dental impression trays and prepare stone models for diagnostic purposes.
It's a six-week program, held every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the new Health Sciences building on the University's Fort Myers campus.
The first class is Oct. 23 (the week of Thanksgiving will be skipped).
Tuition is $1,199 and includes the textbook with bonus materials, the Basic Life Support certification for Health Professionals, and hands-on simulations in a state of the art dental lab.

Fort Myers Technical College receives funding and educational equipment from marine industry
As the marine industry continues to enjoy unprecedented growth, the demand for technicians at both dealerships and service yards is reaching critical levels. As part of a continued effort to develop qualified marine technicians, Yamaha Marine and the MIA of SWFL & TB teamed up in 2020 to help provide the funding and equipment to make it possible for Fort Myers Technical College to offer Yamaha's new Maintenance Certification Program to students during the past school year.
The MIA of SWFL & TB contributed $10,000 toward the five modules of curriculum, and Yamaha donated an F300 V6 outboard for hands-on instruction in the classroom.
"With support from the Marine Industries Associa-tion and their dealer members and Yamaha, Fort Myers Technical College will be better positioned to educate the next generation of Marine technicians," said Yamaha's Gregg Snyder.
Earlier this year, Tom Papesh with York Road Marine contributed a 40 HP Yamaha Outboard Engine towards FMTC’s Marine Program.
Hodges Connect to offer 7-week EMT program this October
Hodges Connect, the workforce initiative of the Hodges University's Professional Education and Training department, is accepting applications for the fall Emergency Medical Technician program.
The seven-week program will begin in October. It's a combination of both lecture and hands-on learning in Hodges University's state-of-the-art Health Sciences Building on the Fort Myers campus.
"By completing this program and passing the exam, they can work in the field. It also opens up other career opportunities," said Dr. Jeff Ziomek, EMS program director.
