The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's reconvened in person on Saturday for the first time since 2019, following last year's virtual event. More than 250 Lee County residents walked at Bishop Verot Catholic High School, raising $77,000 for the care, support and research programs
of the Alzheimer's Association.
Came to Believe was the top fundraising team at this year's event, raising more than $11,000. Team member Iris Hanney walked for her mother Paula Rugoff. "It was amazing to watch a strong, loving, dedicated woman become a mere shell of herself – and then I understood the devastation of this disease." said Hanney, who also lost her dog to dementia, "No one is immune–not even our beloved pets."

According to the Alzheimer's Association, more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease - a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer's and other dementias. In Florida alone, there are more than 580,000 people living with the disease and 527,000 caregivers.
